Hotel details

The Hotel de France was built on the Schottenring part of Vienna's Ringstrasse in 1872 by the architects Franz Fröhlich and Anton Ölzelt. One year later, in 1873, a world exhibition took place in Vienna. To radiate an international ambience, the new hotel was named "de France", which at that time was considered to be chic and elegant. In October 1876 Ölzelt attended a concert by Anton Bruckner in Klosterneuburg Monastery and was so impressed by his music that he offered him an apartment in the Hotel de France. Bruckner gratefully accepted the offer and stayed at the hotel until the summer of 1895. During this time he composed many of his most famous works.
