Historically significant for its position on the main trading route in medieval Europe, Krakow continues to bustle with activity, and these days is coined the "Cultural Capital of Poland”.
For over 550 years, Krakow was the administrative capital of Poland. In the year 1000, one of the first Roman Catholic bishoprics was erected here. Its breadth of well preserved architecture has inspired UNESCO to declare the city a world heritage site. It was the beloved city of Pope John Paul II, who spent forty years here as student, university lecturer, priest, archbishop and cardinal.
