Baixa (500 m) - remains an imposing district, with elegant squares, pedestrianized streets, cafes, and shops. Old tramcars, street performers, tiled Art Deco shopfronts, elaborately decorated pastry shops, and street vendors selling everything from flowers to souvenirs, all lend a special charm to the area.
St.Georges Castle (2 km)- captured from the Moors in 1147 by Portuguese knights and crusaders from England and Flanders, the castle has an area of around 6000 square metres with several towers and a charming hilltop citadel with geese and ducks roaming around the castle gardens. Once used as a fortress, today it is home to many local families and is a place that certainly deserves a visit.
Up the avenue you find Eduardo VII Park. This park provides excellent views over the city and is frequently used to hold exhibitions, concerts and the annual booksellers fair. You can also visit the Cold Greenhouse. This is a real green museum where plants and flowers from the 5 continents grow harmoniously together.
