Košice surroundings
Košice is the second biggest city of Slovakia and metropolis of the Eastern Slovakia. The city itself is an important urban and industrial unit, university town with developed educational system, culture and scientific institutes. The central zone of Košice is composed of approximately 500 listed buildings in the urban preservation of monuments. The most important historical building is the gothic St. Elisabeth cathedral from 14th century. Among precious buildings can be found the Urban’s tower with bell museum, St. Michael chapel and old churches of monastic orders Dominicans, Franciscans, Jesuits and Premonstratensians.
Košice is also favoring the sports. During the summer can be performed water skiing on the municipal lake. And the winter season offers snow skiing for beginning and advanced skiers on the surrounding slopes inside of the beautiful nature.
The metropolis of the East is thanks to its place an ideal site for challenging or easy family excursions in an attractive environment. The favored visitor’s place is the creek valley Čermelský potok with the biggest park forest in Košice and the local children railway whose terminal is the holiday resort Alpinka.
One of the city’s attractions is also the zoo, one of the biggest in central Europe. The zoo is located in the urban satellite Kavečany where was built the challenging toboggan run. Popular is also the observation tower with wonderful sights of the city.
The European rarity is the cold geyser in the village of Herľany that is worth for a visit. Only few kilometers far can be visited the medieval castle Krásna Hôrka and the castle of Betliar.
